Why does history need to be behind a paywall? Why do you need an institutional login to read the latest research?

Historically Modern is set to connect you to the latest historical research by emerging female and genderqueer* scholars, to help break down the barrier between academics and the public.

* We recognize that this term may be considered exclusionary and may not adequately describe one's self-identification. We use this term as an umbrella word to represent all those who do not conform to the gender binary, which may include (but is not limited to) those who are non-binary, trans, gender fluid, or intersex. Our site is proud to be a welcoming space for those who have been historically marginalized or silenced by academia, and those who continue to feel excluded or limited by traditional academic spaces.

Travel Through History

This year, Volume Two: Here, There, Everywhere, is an exploration of history around the world. With articles that will take you around Canada, looking at our heritage, our history, and our communities, to articles that will tour you overseas, Historically Modern is going international! This will also be our first year open to global submission from historians (and scholars in related fields) from anywhere in the world. Not only will we have diverse topics, but we will also have geographically diverse collaborators.

Let's travel through history together!

Announcements

We're happy to announce that Ash Haslett Cuff is our December collaborator, a recent MA graduate from the University of York, UK. She will be writing about tensions between Indigenous Fijians and Indo-Fijians, and the European Colonial forces that exacerbated tensions for reasons of conquest and division. Read her article on December 15th.
